This doctoral dissertation analyzes the institutional meanings attributed to
Differential and Integral Calculus in the Chemical Engineering program at the Faculty of
Engineering of Olavarría (FIO). The first step consists in constructing an institutional
reference meaning, based on the analysis of scientific publications, official documents,
interviews with practicing chemical engineers, and final degree projects. This construction
constitutes the main theoretical–methodological contribution of the study. Subsequently, a
case study focused on FIO is developed, through which the intended, implemented, and
evaluated meanings in the courses Mathematics I and Mathematics II are identified and
analyzed. The analysis, guided by the Onto-Semiotic Approach to Mathematical
Knowledge and Instruction, enables a comparison of these meanings with each other and
with the reference meaning, identifying consistencies, tensions, and their relevance for the
education of chemical engineers.
