El volcán Copahue

Abstract

El volcán Copahue, ubicado en el segmento central de la Zona Volcánica Sur (ZVS), forma parte de un complejo volcano-tectónico desarrollado bajo un régimen transtensional en el extremo norte de la Zona de Falla Liquiñe-Ofqui. Representa el exponente más reciente de un volcanismo persistente y químicamente homogéneo desde tiempos miocenos. Durante su evolución se distinguen etapas pre, sin y post-glacial, además de la actividad precursora. El registro histórico abarca 12 erupciones en los últimos 250 años, incluyendo explosiones freáticas y freatomagmáticas. La última erupción ocurrió en el año 2000. El desarrollo creciente de las localidades de Caviahue y Copahue impone la necesidad de continuar con los estudios de base y monitoreo con el fin de contribuir a la prevención del riesgo volcánico.

Copahue volcano, located in the South Volcanic Zone (SVZ) belongs to a transtension dominated volcano-tectonic complex at the northern Liquiñe-Ofqui Fault Zone. It represents the most recent of a persistent and homogeneous volcanic activity since miocene times. During Copahue evolution, prior volcanism and pre-, sin- and postglacial stages may be distinguished. The historic record encompasses 12 events during the last 250 years, including phreatic and phreatomagmatic explosive eruptions. The last one occurred in 2000. Due to the increasing development of Caviahue and Copahue towns, it is very important to continue studying and monitoring this volcano in order to prevent the volcanic risk.
