The objective of this thesis was to study the population structure and individual growth of the chiton C. isabellei in the low-intertidal zone of Punta Verde in San Antonio Bay, Río Negro, Argentina. To achieve this, several samplings were carried out between April 2021 and May 2022 in order to study the relationship between grain size and emersion time with the species' density in the low-
intertidal zone, determine the period of growth rings formation, understand the demographic structure in terms of sizes, weights, and ages, and study individual growth. Results indicate that the species density is related to granulometry, with higher densities in areas with larger mean grain size. Emersion time does not appear to directly affect the species density, but it could have
indirect effects on its distribution. Growth rings have an annual periodicity and are formed at the beginning of summer. There is a vertical segregation by sizes, weights and ages: youngest and oldest chitons are found on lower levels, while in the upper levels, chitons generally exhibit intermediate ages. The species maximum longevity is at least 11 years. The results of this study
provide information about the population of C. isabellei in the low-intertidal zone of Punta Verde and are presented as a first approach to the use of growth rings for age determination in polyplacophoran mollusks in Argentina.
The rocky intertidal is one of the most rigorous environments to endure in terms of environmental factors, organisms there must endure adverse conditions during low tide. In the intertidal zone of the northwest coast of the San Matías Gulf, a rocky reef is discovered in which a population of an octocoral of the genus Alcyonium is found. In this study, the presence of this octocoral is recorded for the first time in the intertidal zone of Argentina, describing the population in terms of its colony size, abundance, biomass and coverage. On the other hand, through generalized linear mixed models (GLMM), the relationship between environmental
variables, such as aerial exposure time, water motion, wave incidence, substrate inclination angle and the richness of the community assemblage, with the opulation characteristics of Alcyonim sp. was studied. The most closely factor related to abundance was water motion, the most closely related with colony size was aerial exposure, while both factors were related to coverage. On the other hand, the relationships between the inclination angle and the incidence of waves, and the abundance and size of the colonies were relatively minor. Based on these
results, and due to its methodological advantages, coverage is considered the most appropriate parameter to study the population of Alcyonium sp. in this environment.
Las algas verdes Ulva spp y el alga parda Undaria pinnatifida tuvieron menor número promedio de presas (13,25 y 13,50, respectivamente), pero la diversidad fue similar a las otras algas.; Understanding the habitat selection and preference of vulnerable species is essential to propose measures and strategies for the conservation of the species and its environments. The objective was to evaluate the preference of the Patagonian seahorse Hippocampus patagonicus for different types of biogenic substrates found in San Antonio Bay, both in the natural environment and in captivity. The availability and selection of biogenic substrates were assessed in the natural environment, the abundance and diversity of potential prey on
each substrate were determined, and substrate selection was experimentally evaluated in an aquarium considering the presence of prey.
In the natural environment, H. patagonicus used more frequently the red algae, Ceramium rubrum and the brown algae Dictyota dichotoma (81%), which are the most abundant substrates in San Antonio Bay. The highest richness of prey species was observed in the sponge Hymeniacidon perlevis (31.25%) and the ascidian Styela clava (29.50%). Green algae Ulva spp. and the brown alga U. pinnatifida had fewer prey (13.25% and 13.5%, respectively), but their diversity was similar to other algae. In aquarium, substrate selection was independent of prey presence. The most chosen substrate was the ascidian S. clava (53%), followed by U. pinnatifida (15.63%). In experiments using artificial substrates (mimics), the most chosen substrate was the ascidian S. clava (56.25%),
followed by the red alga C. rubrum (12.50%), and the brown algae U. pinnatifida (12.50%). In the coastal environments of San Antonio Bay, H. patagonicus uses the most abundant algae in its habitat as a substrate for attachment, while resting or camouflaging. However, in aquarium, this seahorse shows preference for the ascidian S. clava, which seems to be related to the substrate´s structure rather than the availability of potential prey. In the context of increased modification of coastal environments due to anthropogenic activities, Inderstanding the habitat preferences of vulnerable species, such as the Patagonian seahorse, is crucial for contributing to the conservation and protection of both, the species and the environments of San Antonio Bay where it thrives.
Esto podría significar una gran ventaja en la susceptibilidad a patógenos y supervivencia en mar de los salmónidos de cultivo.; Previous studies suggest a biological link between two of the main causes of mortality in Chilean aquaculture: Infectious diseases and the smoltification stage. Piscirickettsia salmonis is a problem for aquaculture due to its economic impact and influence on the sustainability of the aquatic environment. S. salar represents 50% of the total fish culture in Chile, so it is important to address this issue. Our objective was to evaluate the immune response of Salmo salar transferred to seawater by a gradual change in salinity and salt shock and subsequently
challenge with Piscirickettsia salmonis. Samples of the head kidneys were collected before and after the transfer and after exposure to P. salmonis to investigate by RT-qPCR the transcriptional changes of genes related to the immune response, oxidative stress, and iron transport. Results obtained during transfer to seawater showed a change in the expression of genes related to immune response between CGS and SS concerning AD for MHCII and IL1β
(p< 0,05) and between CGS and AD for TLR22_3 (p< 0,05). In addition, a significant difference was observed in the expression of the SOD, CAT, and Ferritin-M genes between CGS and CGS25DPI (p< 0,05), and the expression of haptoglobin was modified in all study cases (p< 0,05) of infected fish after transfer to seawater. This indicates that the method used for transfer to seawater intervenes in the way in which fish respond to a bacterial infection.
The immunologically most “robust” group was exposed to a gradual change in salinity because it did not carry the previous deregulation of salt shock. This could be a major advantage for pathogen susceptibility and marine survival of farmed salmonids
